Pit & Fissure Sealants

Back teeth often have deep pits and grooves where food and plaque can collect. A fissure sealant is a thin protective resin placed over these grooves to make the surface easier to clean and reduce the risk of decay.

Why sealants are used

  • They physically cover vulnerable pits and fissures
  • Smoother sealed surfaces are easier to keep clean
  • They are especially useful for newly erupted permanent molars with deep grooves

What happens during placement

  • The tooth is cleaned and kept dry
  • The surface is prepared so the sealant can bond
  • Liquid sealant is flowed into the grooves and hardened
  • The bite is checked and adjusted if needed

Follow-up

  • Sealants are reviewed during routine dental visits
  • They can wear or chip and may need repair or replacement
  • Sealants complement brushing, fluoride and a tooth-friendly diet; they do not replace them
The exact procedure, suitability, number of visits and healing time vary from patient to patient and can only be confirmed after a clinical examination.
