Bone Grafting

Dental implants need adequate bone for stable support. When bone has reduced after tooth loss, gum disease or other causes, bone grafting may be used to rebuild the area and improve the foundation for implant placement.

Why grafting may be recommended

  • The jaw ridge is too narrow or shallow for the planned implant
  • Bone has resorbed after a tooth was removed
  • Gum disease or infection has reduced supporting bone
  • A socket or implant site needs additional regeneration

How it may be planned

  • Dental X-rays or 3D imaging help assess the amount of available bone
  • Small grafts may sometimes be carried out at the same time as implant placement
  • Larger defects may require a separate graft and a healing period before the implant is placed

Graft materials

  • Depending on the case, grafting materials may be synthetic, processed donor-derived, animal-derived or the patient's own bone
  • The dentist or implant surgeon recommends the material according to site, defect size and clinical needs
The exact procedure, suitability, number of visits and healing time vary from patient to patient and can only be confirmed after a clinical examination.
